Tweede deel. - Een reis naar Brobdingnag.
A learned physician from modest English roots, he spends his youth in Cambridge, then apprentices under a London surgeon while gathering enough funds to study medicine in Leiden. After a stint as a ship’s doctor on voyages to the Levant, he settles briefly in London, marries, and tries to build a practice among the seafaring community. Dissatisfied with the slow fortunes on shore, he rejoins the crew of a new expedition bound for the South Seas, eager for fresh horizons.
The journey turns disastrous when a ferocious storm drives the vessel onto a remote, mist‑shrouded coast. Clinging to life, he swims to safety and finds himself on an unfamiliar shore inhabited by people no taller than a thumb. Captured by these diminutive citizens, he is thrust into a world where ordinary objects become towering obstacles, and his every move is observed with a mixture of curiosity and caution.

Best known for Gulliver’s Travels and the razor-sharp essay A Modest Proposal, this Anglo-Irish writer turned satire into a powerful way of exposing human folly, politics, and injustice. He was also an Anglican clergyman whose public life and literary work were closely intertwined.
