Description

Set in the bustling streets of late‑Victorian London, the story follows a clever housekeeper who finds herself at the centre of a growing mystery in Great Porter Square. When a young, resourceful girl named Fanny is placed in the household, the narrator sees an opportunity to keep a watchful eye on a strange new lodger, Richard Manx, whose nocturnal movements stir unease among the residents. Amid gossip, lingering toothaches, and whispered plans for expanding the boarding house, everyday life takes on an undercurrent of suspicion.

Fanny, trained by the narrator to move unseen, becomes an unlikely detective, noting the lodger’s odd habits—a wig, painted face, and secretive footsteps that echo through the walls. As the household’s fortunes hinge on a forthcoming inheritance, alliances shift and the quiet observer gathers clues that could unmask a hidden danger. Listeners are drawn into a tightly woven tale of observation, loyalty, and the subtle tension that builds behind closed doors.
