Description

Set aboard the Boston‑registered brig Gentile as it lies at anchor in the harbor of Valletta in March 1839, this tale opens with a meticulous portrait of a ship that feels almost alive. The narrator guides the listener through the gleaming hull, the neatly coiled rigging, and the lively deck scene, where a contented cow, a watchful Newfoundland dog, and a cheeky parrot keep company with the crew. Amid the clatter of pots and the scent of a steaming supper, the stage is set for a cast of characters whose interactions promise both humor and tension.

At the heart of the story is the bright‑minded Mr. Langley, a young apprentice navigating his duties under the watchful eye of the ship’s seasoned officers. Alongside him are the ever‑efficient cook known as the Doctor, a genteel mulatto steward, and a colorful crew of sailors who share meals, songs, and stories as the Mediterranean night deepens. Their camaraderie and the ship’s elegant yet sturdy design hint at the challenges and discoveries that lie ahead on the voyage.
