Description

The story opens with a fashionable Parisian countess who suddenly inherits a lonely, centuries‑old castle far from the city’s glitter. Accompanied by a troupe of friends and flirtatious admirers, she sets out in late summer, only to lose her way on a treacherous mountain road and arrive at a bleak, moss‑covered stronghold that looks more like a ruin than a retreat. Her initial shock gives way to witty observations about the crumbling walls, the untended gardens, and the absurdity of spending a leisurely day in such a somber setting.

Inside, the guests discover faded tapestries, three‑legged chairs and a piano that has not been played in decades, prompting jokes that lift the mood. As they explore the overgrown terraces and listen to the rush of the nearby torrent, they begin to sense the hidden charms of the remote countryside, hinting at a life far different from their Parisian routines. The narrative promises a romance that will unfold when a village doctor, accustomed to the rhythms of rural life, crosses paths with the spirited countess and her lively entourage.
