James Vernon has never wanted for comfort. Raised by doting parents and heir to a considerable fortune, his early life is a litany of indulgence that leaves him ill‑prepared for the freedoms of university. Surrounded by a throng of peers and lacking a firm mentor, he drifts into frivolity, neglecting his studies and attracting the scorn of faculty.

When his reckless behavior finally earns him expulsion, the shock reverberates through his household.
