A routine blast deep in the Elkhorn mine tears through quartz and talc, revealing a vein of pure gold that doesn’t belong to the mine’s owner, the hard‑hearted “Hard” Sturdivant. The men who see it are torn between loyalty to their boss and the instinct to warn the Hendersons, a family already on the brink of ruin. The superintendent’s desperate orders to keep the find secret clash with a growing whisper that spreads through the shafts like fire.
Engineer Steve Conley, working the night shift, races to tell his old friend Clark Henderson about the strike, knowing that Sturdivant’s arrival from Denver will seal the fate of the newly‑found wealth. Clark, a debt‑burdened mountaineer, realizes the gold could be his salvation, but the clock ticks as Sturdivant’s claim looms just hours away. The tension between greed, loyalty, and survival begins to shape the choices each man will soon have to make.

A little-known pulp-era storyteller, remembered today for the adventure tale "Gold," wrote of mining camps and frontier conflict with brisk, old-school energy. Very little biographical information seems to survive, which only adds to the mystery around this early genre writer.
