Transcriber’s Notes
George Croghan emerges as a portrait of early American grit and modesty. Born in Kentucky in 1791 to a lineage of Revolutionary officers, his youth is marked by quiet determination, a steady mind, and a willingness to place friends’ needs above his own comforts. Those who watched him grow noted a blend of quiet confidence and disciplined resolve, traits that would later define his service.
In the War of 1812, Croghan’s rise was swift: at just twenty‑one he temporarily commanded Fort Wayne, then earned commendation for defending Fort Defiance and Fort Meigs. His most celebrated moment came at Fort Stephenson, where his clever tactics held off overwhelming forces, earning him the admiration of a nation eager for heroes. After the war he settled into quieter roles, serving as a postmaster in New Orleans and later as an inspector general, offering a calm conclusion to an otherwise daring early career.
