Description

In 1872 a British surgeon set out from the banks of the Indus, crossing the rugged frontier of Balochistan and moving into Afghanistan, Khorasan, and Iran. His account captures the stark geography, from the soaring Míloh Pass to the arid plains along the Helmand, while noting the daily rhythms of villages, caravans, and military outposts. Along the way he records weather, altitude, and a surprisingly detailed sketch of the Brahoe language, offering a glimpse into a culture rarely documented by outsiders.

Throughout the early stages of his trek, he encounters hospitable hosts, tense tribal negotiations, and the lingering shadow of the Great Game between Britain and Russia. The narrative blends practical observations—such as the challenges of supply trains and the impact of sudden sandstorms—with vivid descriptions of bustling bazaars and quiet desert nights. Listeners will hear the rhythm of a 19th‑century frontier expedition, where scientific curiosity meets the immediacy of survival in a land on the cusp of geopolitical change.
