Description

A lively travelogue opens with the author’s departure from the familiar streets of Edinburgh, drifting through the bustle of London’s parks, Regent Street and Piccadilly. The narrative captures fleeting moments—train whistles, night‑time crowds, and the odd commentary on loyalty and royalty—while the accompanying colour plates bring the scenes to vivid life. From Victoria Station the journey shifts to the sea, where the elegance of a P&O liner is balanced by the humor of first‑class discomfort and the weather’s whims as the ship rounds the Iberian coast.

The voyage continues through the Mediterranean, past the bustling wharves of Marseilles and the bright markets of Egypt, each port offering a sketch of local colour and cuisine. Arriving in Bombay, the writer records the fanfare of royal receptions, the clatter of processions and the curious mix of great and ordinary people that greet the newcomer. The early chapters set a tone of curious observation, witty digressions and a genuine sense of wonder at the world beyond Britain’s shores.
