In a rugged coastal village of northern Norway, a restless boy named Nordhung Nordjansen spends his evenings perched on craggy cliffs, eyes fixed on the endless sea. Though his father warns that curiosity about the unknown is sinful, the young Nordhung cannot quell his fascination with the ships that glide beyond the horizon. His imagination turns the distant waters into a tapestry of promise, and each stolen moment fuels a growing resolve to discover what lies beyond the familiar fjords.
Years later, after the weight of family duty has lifted, Nordhung steps aboard a vessel as its newly appointed commander. The narrative follows his first daring voyages through icy waters, where towering icebergs loom and the aurora paints the night sky. As he steers toward the mysterious northern lights, his inner conflict between reverence for tradition and the pull of adventure drives the story forward, inviting listeners to share his awe‑filled quest for the unknown.

An early American voice in weird fiction, she wrote eerie, imaginative tales that blend the supernatural with late-Victorian curiosity. Her best-known collection, Floating Fancies Among the Weird and the Occult, helped place a woman writer in the early history of science fiction and horror.
