Description

In a breezy Como courtyard, a stylish young lady leans over a balcony, her curiosity sparked by the new steam vessels that have begun to glide across the lake. She questions a poised gentleman about the arrival of the paddle‑wheelers, their speed and elegance, while the hum of the bustling harbor frames their exchange. Their dialogue weaves together admiration for modern engineering and a wistful longing for distant horizons, hinting at the restless spirit that fuels the era’s social gatherings.

The gentleman, seasoned by voyages along the Thames and the Rhine, replies with vivid recollections of his own encounters with steamships, drawing a map of memories that stretch from England to the Adriatic. Yet his eyes betray a deeper attachment to his homeland, and to the lady whose presence inspires both gentle teasing and earnest confession. Their repartee hints at an imminent departure, a plan that could set both hearts and ambitions adrift on the waters of Lake Como.
