Eye Service and Love Service

Two sisters, Bessie and Meggie, are left in charge of their humble cottage while their mother goes gleaning in the harvest fields. With their baby brother asleep in his cradle, they set about their chores and discover that doing right is not merely a matter of being watched. Their quiet faithfulness is soon tested when a mischievous neighbor invites them to leave the house and join a forbidden bit of fortune-telling.

This gentle moral tale contrasts “eye service”—obedience only when someone is looking—with service offered willingly, out of love. As the girls face pressure to ignore their mother’s wishes, young listeners are encouraged to think about honesty, responsibility, and the difference between following rules and understanding the care behind them. A simple rural setting, lively dialogue, and a clear lesson make this a warm story for family listening.
