In the cramped, smoky world of Al’s Dance Hall, long‑time drifter Jim Briggs finds himself drawn into a night that erupts far beyond the usual clink of glasses. A striking red‑haired woman, drunk and angry, shatters a saucer over Jim’s eye, while the hall’s proprietor, Captain Mac, spirals into a volatile rage. When a desperate plea from Rosie, a sensible Irish girl caught in the chaos, reaches Jim’s ears, his protective instincts—honed from years of hard labor and quiet longing—kick into gear.
Jim’s attempt to usher Rosie out quickly turns brutal; the hall’s bouncer, Hard Pan Schmitz, looms as a hulking obstacle, and Jim must improvise a fierce defense with a lamp and broken glass. He manages to wrench the pair through a snow‑laden back alley and into a dilapidated shack, slamming the door against the turmoil behind them. Inside the dim room, the pair catches their breath, aware that the night’s violence has only begun to reveal the fragile line between survival and surrender.
