On a windswept coast where cliffs give way to churning seas, three childhood friends—Enoch, the rough‑hewn sailor; Philip, the miller’s son; and Annie, the lively daughter of a harbor family—grow up playing among tide‑washed sands and hidden caves. As they mature, Enoch’s fierce devotion to Annie drives him to save every penny, buying his own boat and dreaming of a home where they can build a life together.
Their hopes seem fulfilled when they marry and enjoy several years of steady work, children’s laughter, and the simple comforts of a modest cottage perched above the quay. Yet a sudden accident aboard a vessel leaves Enoch grievously injured, forcing him into a long convalescence far from the bustling port. Isolated and helpless, he watches his family struggle to endure without the steady hand that once anchored their world.
