Description

A sprawling plantation rests on the banks of the Corentin River, where tropical gardens burst with fragrant vines, towering palms and glittering birdcages. The manor, built of double‑brick and crowned with tall chimneys, reflects the wealth of its owner while the surrounding jungle hums with life. Sun‑soaked courtyards and cool stone vaults give the estate an air of both grandeur and exotic mystery.

Lord Vanderstraten, a self‑made magnate who shipped silk, sugar and silver back to Europe, presides over this paradise with a demanding eye. He counts on the arrival of his sister’s son, a shy youth of eight to nineteen years, believing the boy will become his heir and continue the family’s fortunes. The young Emmerich carries the hopes of a distant German relative and the weight of a future that hinges on his acceptance into this world of luxury and labor.

As the distant ship draws near, the estate prepares for the newcomer’s first steps among its towering palms and bustling slave quarters. Beneath the opulent façade, cultural tensions and hidden ambitions stir, promising a journey that will test the boy’s resolve and reshape the lives of those around him.

A remarkably prolific German writer for young readers and ordinary families, he turned out adventure tales, moral stories, and popular retellings that traveled widely beyond his own time. Before that literary success, he also worked as a bookseller and studied philosophy.
