CHAPITRE V DE LA MAISON D'OR A KALAA ET A LA PLAINE.
A determined Parisian woman sets out for the rugged Kabylie mountains, hoping the fresh air and exotic scenery will restore the health that the damp Parisian winters have stolen from her. She leaves the comforts of Algiers despite warnings about the unrest, the harsh terrain, and the fierce local customs that guard the Djurjura peaks. Her companion, a slender doctor, believes the journey may be the cure she needs, and together they join a small, intrepid party at the bustling Bresson square.
The road quickly proves treacherous: steep passes, swollen streams, and narrow mountain tracks test both carriage and resolve. Along the way, the travelers encounter wary Kabyle villagers whose hospitality is mingled with suspicion, and the ever‑present tension of a region on the brink of rebellion. The landscape shifts from fragrant plains to stark cliffs, offering breathtaking vistas that contrast sharply with the ever‑looming danger of landslides and sudden storms.
Amid these challenges, the narrator’s curiosity about the people and the culture drives her forward, turning each obstacle into a chance to observe a world far removed from the salons of Paris. Listeners are invited to share her awe, her unease, and the vivid impressions that arise from stepping into a land where tradition and turmoil coexist.
