Description

This moving Portuguese elegy begins amid dark clouds, ominous birds, cypresses, and the mournful landscape of the Tagus. Its speaker confronts the ancient law of mortality, which casts virtue, beauty, rank, and human joy into the grave without distinction. At the center of the lament stands José Thomaz de Menezes, remembered as courageous, generous, and gifted—one who mastered untamed horses, delighted his people, and embodied a fading glory of Portugal.

The poem also turns toward the bereaved father, whose anguish is treated with tenderness and solemn respect. Against the violence of grief, the speaker invokes Christian faith, divine providence, and the hope of an immortal life, allowing sorrow to soften into consolation without losing its intensity. A concluding sonnet distills the meditation into a stark warning: everything ends, and every reader is invited to pause before death’s inscription and consider the fragile limits of human existence.
