Description

In the late‑summer streets of a Hudson river town, a weary father is called upon by his wife to track down the neighborhood children who have slipped away into the bustling tenements. The scene opens with the clamor of a crowded stairwell, a boy named Bobsey racing through the dusk, his coat torn and his hands blackened from endless labor. As the father gathers the youngster and hears the distant cries of other youngsters, the everyday hardships of city life – cramped apartments, ragged clothing, the ever‑present threat of illness – come sharply into focus.

Determined to protect the youngsters without harsh discipline, he navigates the noisy corridors, confronting a locked door, a cheap newspaper filled with lurid pictures, and the lingering fear of scarlet fever that has already plagued the community. Through his quiet compassion and practical resolve, the story paints a vivid portrait of urban childhood, familial duty, and the yearning for a greener, safer place beyond the cramped streets.
