Description

In these vivid memoirs a seasoned U.S. cavalry officer recalls a time when the northern wilderness was a restless stage for both conquest and community. The early nineteenth‑century frontier stretches from the St. Lawrence valley to the lakes of New York, where French émigrés carve elegant manors beside the simple cabins of Yankee pioneers. Against this backdrop the echo of muskets and the clang of carronades signal a second clash with the British, while the land itself seems as much a foe as any foreign army.

The narrative follows the partnership of the narrator and D’ri, a rugged frontiersman labeled “pure‑bred Yankee” by local woodsfolk. Their exploits blend bold cavalry charges, daring river raids, and moments of quiet reflection on a life shaped by both Puritan discipline and a touch of French romance. Listeners will be drawn into a world of snow‑capped forests, smoky taverns, and the harsh yet hopeful spirit of those who forged a new America on the edge of the wild.
