Description

A lively household prepares for an evening soirée, and the cramped attic becomes a stage for slapstick mayhem. Servants scurry, hats tumble, and a retired furrier’s frantic attempts to keep his drawing‑rooms in order set the tone for a whirlwind of comic mishaps. The cast—ranging from a scheming niece and a pompous miliner to a bewildered captain—creates a bustling tableau of Victorian eccentricities.

Amid the chaos, young Phœbe, a bright‑spirited dreamer, juggles secret letters, misplaced linens, and the promise of a grand party on the second floor. Her attempts to impress a modest chemist’s assistant spark a cascade of mistaken identities, frantic announcements, and a broom‑induced hat catastrophe. As the clock ticks toward the night’s festivities, every character’s ambition collides in a charming, fast‑paced farce that keeps the laughter rising with each hurried footstep.

Best remembered for the hit farce Box and Cox, this prolific English dramatist helped define Victorian stage comedy with brisk plots, comic misunderstandings, and a gift for crowd-pleasing dialogue. His work was hugely popular in the mid-19th century and kept his name alive long after the first curtain fell.
