Description

Buck Bradford is a restless young man living on the edge of the Wisconsin frontier, sharing a modest home with his frail sister who bears a physical disability. Their world is bounded by the bustling river towns and the looming presence of the Fishley family, whose harsh authority casts a shadow over everyday life. When a petty dispute over a simple task—blackening a pair of boots—escalates into open hostility, Buck finally decides enough is enough.

The clash with Ham Fishley ignites a spark of defiance in Buck, who realizes that honor and self‑respect demand more than silent endurance. With a mixture of courage and practicality, he begins to plot a way out of the tyrannical grip, gathering the tools and resolve needed for a daring escape. The notion of building a raft and heading downstream begins to take shape, promising freedom beyond the fish‑laden banks.

As Buck sets his sights on the mighty Mississippi, the story becomes a vivid portrait of youthful determination, honesty, and the lure of the great river’s promise. Listeners will travel alongside his early trials, feeling the rush of a young man’s first step toward self‑reliance and the open water that beckons beyond his troubled hometown.
