In the far‑flung region of Ostromdscha, where the only law is that the weaker must yield to the stronger, a small party of travelers finds themselves thrust into a tribal court. Their arrival coincides with a tense hearing that has drawn a crowd of locals onto the dusty courtyard, their faces illuminated by oil lamps that cast a flickering glow over the scene. The narrator, an outsider used to more orderly proceedings, watches as the judges and their armed retainers take their places, ready to dispense justice in a manner both foreign and formidable.
The first accusation is laid out with dramatic flair: a local official claims he was ambushed by the newcomers, narrowly escaping death through sheer bravery. The judges, led by the imposing Kodscha Bascha, pronounce a severe punishment—forty lashes and a month of confinement—while the atmosphere crackles with a mixture of fear and dark humor. As the court prepares to hear the second charge, the tension mounts, promising further insight into the harsh customs that govern this remote land.
