Description

Don Hale is a fresh‑off‑the‑boat American who throws himself into the chaos of the Western Front as a Red Cross ambulance driver. Along with his fellow volunteers, he shuttles wounded soldiers through the shattered villages near Verdun, hearing the constant roar of artillery and feeling the ever‑present threat of shellfire. The novel captures the gritty reality of life in a war‑torn zone while also showing the fierce camaraderie that keeps the young men moving forward.

Beyond the daily grind of rescue missions, Don finds his curiosity drawn to the eerie Château de Morancourt, an ancient manor that looms over the battlefield like a silent witness. Together with his friends—including the artistic Dunstan, who sketches the war’s stark scenery—he becomes entangled in a puzzling mystery that offers a brief escape from the front‑line horrors. The story balances tense action with moments of human connection, inviting listeners to experience both the danger and the unexpected intrigue that define Don’s early wartime adventures.
