Description

A night‑watchman’s musings set the scene, insisting that true schooling comes from the sea—a belief that still echoes in the cramped, smoky streets of early‑1900s Wapping. In the middle of this world stands George Dixon, a quiet, respectable landlord of the Blue Lion, whose life has been shaped by the rhythms of the docks and the steady hum of tavern life.

At home, George’s gentle nature clashes with the fierce temperament of his wife, whose sharp tongue and relentless demands turn the public house into a battlefield of pride. When the boisterous cousins Charlie and Bob join the bar as barman and helper, the pressure mounts, and a simmering tension finally erupts as George, fed up with humiliation, confronts his wife in a rare, trembling stand‑up. The encounter hints at deeper struggles of power, dignity, and the search for a voice amid the clamor of the waterfront.

1863–1943

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
