A violent thunderstorm tears across the countryside, scattering trees and drenching the fields in relentless rain. Caught in the gale, an elderly count rushes home, his breath ragged and his spirit dimmed by the howling wind. Amid the chaos he muses over a wager he made with a neighboring landowner, a playful competition that now feels absurdly trivial against nature’s fury. The storm becomes a catalyst, pushing the old noble toward the looming shadows of his ancestral castle, where secrets and old grudges linger.
Beyond the tempest, a restless group of boys—later known as the “black brothers”—find themselves drawn into the count’s world, their youthful vigor contrasting the aged melancholy of the manor. Their first encounter with the storm‑scarred estate hints at a larger journey, filled with daring escapades, hidden loyalties, and the promise of adventure that will test both courage and friendship.

A lively storyteller and public-minded reformer, he moved from Prussia to Switzerland and became known for fiction, history, and practical writing aimed at ordinary readers. His life joined literature with politics, giving his work an unusually direct sense of the world beyond the page.
