Description

Set in the mist‑shrouded Great East Swamp, the story opens with two restless boys, Dick and Tom, perched on a wheelwright’s post and a rough punt while a crackling bonfire blazes nearby. They watch the gruff wheelwright labor over a red‑hot iron tire, the heat and wind stirring the reeds into a whispering sea of reeds that frames the boys’ impatient chatter. A lank, grey‑haired stranger arrives with a sack of wildfowl, his eyes sharp and his presence uneasy, prompting the boys to tease and question the strange bird he carries.

Through vivid, ear‑friendly language the narrative captures the sights, sounds, and smells of fen life—smoldering wood, the clatter of wheels, and the bark of feisty dogs that stalk the workshop. As the fire roars and the boys hover between mischief and curiosity, the scene hints at a larger adventure waiting just beyond the glow, inviting listeners to step into a world where everyday toil hides unexpected encounters.
