Dick and His Cat, and Other Tales

In a medieval village, a nameless orphan named Dick wanders the streets, surviving on scraps while dreaming of a brighter future. When a kindly wagon driver, known for his gentle treatment of horses, offers Dick a place beside his cart, the boy sees a chance to escape poverty and head for the legendary promise of London’s golden streets. The journey promises new possibilities, but the road itself already tests Dick’s resolve and hope.

Arriving in the bustling capital, Dick quickly discovers that the city’s glitter is an illusion; hunger gnaws at him and strangers turn away. A compassionate woman, moved by his frail appearance, slips him two pence, giving him a fleeting taste of mercy.
