DEVLIN THE BARBER
In the bustling streets of late‑Victorian London, an ordinary narrator finds himself drawn into a shocking mystery that grips the whole city. A series of baffling crimes and whispered rumors lead him to a modest shop on a crowded lane, where a barber named Devlin works his scissors with an uncanny precision. The barber’s quiet demeanor hides something far stranger—a hint of an unseen, almost otherworldly presence that seems to guide events from the shadows. As the narrator recounts his first encounter, the ordinary world begins to feel thin, and the promise of a deeper, inexplicable force looms.
Compelled to investigate, he visits the Lemon household, where Mrs Lemon’s upstairs rooms hold three oddly shaped objects that pulse with uneasy energy. There, Devlin appears, performing curious tricks that both fascinate and unsettle the guests, and hints at a link between the barber’s skill and a looming murder. The narrator’s curiosity turns to determination as he vows to uncover the truth behind the barber’s strange influence and the invisible hand pulling the strings of London’s darkest secret.

A hugely prolific Victorian storyteller, he turned a restless, globe-spanning life into popular fiction, plays, and journalism. His work moved between London, Australia, and New Zealand, and his family later became literary in its own right.
