DESERTED
A weary night‑watchman shares his cynical view of sailors, then tells the tale of Rupert Brown, a restless young man who trades a hard‑knocked life on a barge for a brief stint in the army. Disillusioned by military uniformity, Rupert deserts during a furlough and drifts into the noisy saloon of the Three Widders at Aldgate, where a flamboyant theatre manager spots something in him that others overlook.
The manager, dripping in gold jewellery and confidence, persuades Rupert that his “actor’s face” could earn him a lucrative part—an exotic role as a Zulu chief—if he’s willing to mask his true self. Over sherry and cigar smoke, the promise of steady pay and a chance to escape the drudgery of service tempts Rupert into a world of theatrical deception. As he follows the manager into a shuttered shop, the story hints at the thin line between performance and fraud, setting the stage for a precarious adventure on the fringe of London’s underbelly.

Best known for the chilling classic "The Monkey’s Paw," this English storyteller had a gift for mixing everyday life with suspense, humor, and a strong sense of place. Much of his work grew out of the dockside world he knew as a boy along the Thames.
