Field work in the cloud forests of southern Mexico and northern Central America revealed a surprising diversity within the little‑known frog genus Ptychohyla. The author distinguishes two broad species groups based on seasonal breeding traits such as ventrolateral glands, nuptial spines, and call structure. One group bears horn‑like spines, a tarsal fold, and a single long note in its call, while the other lacks spines, lacks the fold, and produces a rapid series of short notes. These differences also extend to tadpole morphology, giving researchers a clear framework for sorting the genus.
The paper then presents detailed accounts of two newly discovered species. One, named for its vivid red flash‑colors on the thighs and groin, displays a bright green back and a relatively small tympanum, setting it apart from its relatives. The second species shares a similar habitat but differs in coloration and call patterns, further enriching the genus’s taxonomy. By combining precise measurements, habitat notes, and early observations of behavior, the work provides a solid foundation for future studies of these amphibians and highlights the hidden biodiversity of Mexico’s highland streams.
