The story opens on a quiet Friesland farm where the first light of day spills over the low fields, painting the sky in soft blues and gold. A young farmhand, Sjoerd, moves among the tired ox‑drawn carts and muddy furrows, his hands calloused but his thoughts restless. The rhythm of the land is steady, yet behind the routine a sense of unease grows, as old men gossip about the changing seasons and new faces appear on the horizon.
As Sjoerd watches the golden sun rise, he feels the pull of something beyond the familiar terp, a longing for a life that the endless rows of crops cannot satisfy. Tensions rise among the workers, each clinging to their own hopes and fears, while whispers of distant towns and distant wars drift in like wind. The first act sets a vivid picture of rural hardship, community bonds, and the quiet yearning that will drive the young hero forward.
