Description

Set in the bleak December of 1615, the story opens on a farm just outside Brielle, near the road to Hellevoetsluis. Inside the large kitchen‑turned living room, a stern matriarch oversees the daily chores while the chill of winter seeps through small leaded windows. The household is a microcosm of a world on the brink of change, where the rhythm of sewing, milking, and hearth‑fire blends with whispered tensions. Through vivid, period‑accurate detail, listeners are drawn into the sounds of clattering chains and the scent of the stable drifting in.

At the heart of the tale is Andries, a teenage boy torn between obedience to his formidable mother and his protective instincts toward his younger siblings, especially his frail brother Abraham. His sister Katrijn, sharp‑tongued yet caring, tries to mediate, while the mother’s uncompromising authority hints at deeper secrets and looming hardships. As the family navigates labor, illness, and the harsh winter, the narrative builds a portrait of resilience and quiet defiance that sets the stage for the adventures to come.
