A noisy Athenian assembly becomes the stage for a sharp‑witted political farce, where a flamboyant leader fancies himself the voice of the people. He is introduced as a newly bought Paphlagonian slave, immediately set above his fellow servants, and soon draws the ire of two scheming colleagues. The chorus of noble knights lifts their voices, promising to restore order while mocking his self‑appointed authority.
The drama unfolds as the slave‑leader, desperate to keep his grip, accuses the knights of conspiracy before the council of five hundred. A ridiculous contest of culinary skill erupts, pitting his exotic dishes against the humble offerings of a street‑wise sausage‑seller, each hoping the oracle’s riddles will crown a victor. Lively songs and biting jokes pepper the exchange, turning the political debate into a carnival of satire.
All the while the chorus weaves in lavish praise of ancestors and the gallant horsemen, heightening the absurdity of the showdown. Listeners are drawn into the clash of boasts and barbs, eager to hear which side will outwit the other in this uproarious first act.

A fearless comic voice from ancient Athens, this playwright turned politics, philosophy, and everyday life into sharp, funny theater. His surviving plays still feel lively because they mix outrageous imagination with very human complaints.
