On a bright summer morning at the close of the eighteenth century, a well‑dressed young traveler waits at the quay of Queensferry, hoping to catch the post‑coach that will ferry him across the Forth. The scheduled departure never arrives, and the hubbub of the station turns into a thinly veiled comedy of missed connections. An eccentric shopkeeper, cramped in a low cellar off the High Street, hands out tickets while her stock of ribbons and needles teeters precariously on the stairs, adding a touch of absurdity to the already tangled scene.
Just as the young man’s patience wanes, a dignified stranger in his sixties steps forward. His sharp features, powdered wig and broad‑brimmed hat mark him as a man of learning, yet his hurried entrance and muttered “the drum is in play!” hint at a personality more worldly than scholarly. Their brief exchange—filled with polite reassurances and subtle observations about status, travel etiquette, and the quirks of the missing carriage—sets the tone for a story that gently satirises the pretensions of academia while celebrating the quirks of everyday life.
