Description

Three friends drift lazily in a small boat, eyes fixed on a dark speck that suddenly blossoms into a massive, golden‑brown eagle. The bird swoops down, snatches a silver fish, and then circles back toward the chalk cliffs, its powerful wings beating a steady rhythm against the wind. Their excitement turns to purpose as they decide to follow the raptor to its hidden roost.

Reaching the rugged shoreline, the trio scrambles over slick stones and jagged limestone, each arguing over the best path to the towering pine that crowns the cliffs. Their climb is a test of strength and teamwork, with one of them scaling the trunk like a monkey while the others watch, half‑amused and half‑jealous. At the very top they glimpse the eagle’s nest, where a young, still‑unfledged bird lies motionless, hinting at the mysteries that await them beyond this first daring ascent.

A Swedish novelist and playwright who spent much of his life in Berlin, he moved among some of the most interesting artists of his time, including August Strindberg, Jean Sibelius, Edvard Munch, and Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
