Description

In the frozen wilderness above the big snows, a determined deputy sheriff follows an uncertain trail through silent firs and buried ravines. His quarry is a bearded stranger accused of killing Al Weed in Galena, but the arrest is far from routine: the man claims he does not even know the victim and offers little cooperation beyond dry sarcasm.

With both rifles under control and the prisoner handcuffed to a lodge-pole sapling, the deputy prepares to face the bitter cold and begin the long journey back. Yet the isolated camp, the conflicting stories, and the accused man’s guarded behavior suggest that this pursuit may conceal more than a simple murder charge. Set against a stark northern landscape of snowshoes, rifles, dying fires, and dangerous temperatures, the story opens with a tense confrontation and a mystery that promises trouble at every step.
