Description

A young New Yorker, spurred by Horace Greeley’s rallying cry “Go West,” sets out with a close friend for the untamed plains of Colorado just after the Civil War. Their journey begins with the spectacle of Niagara, moves through bustling Chicago, and soon turns into a perilous trek across Missouri’s law‑less frontier, where outlaws and lingering wartime chaos make every stop a test of nerves.

The narrative follows their slow, winding progress toward the Rocky Mountains, painting vivid scenes of raw geography and the uneasy hospitality of modest towns. Along the way, the travelers confront the stark realities of a trail still marked by hostile Native bands, precarious river crossings, and the ever‑present threat of bandits. Their diary‑like account offers a grounded, unromantic view of the westward rush, revealing how ambition and youthful optimism clash with the unforgiving landscape of 1865 America.
