Description

Set amid the fevered days of the French Revolution, the novel plunges listeners into the clamorous corridors of the Revolutionary Tribunal. Young clerk Robert Wolf, a diligent scribe for the prosecutor’s office, stands before a massive wooden door, his hand trembling over the list of names that will seal fates tomorrow. The stark description of grim gaolers, austere uniforms, and the relentless rhythm of the court’s machinery creates a vivid backdrop of fear and duty.

As Wolf reads the names aloud, the narrative weaves together the lives of those awaiting judgment—soldiers, merchants, mothers—each caught in the torrent of ideology and terror. Alongside him moves the charismatic deputy Chauvinière, whose polished attire and sharp gaze embody the fervor and contradictions of the revolutionary cause. Through tight dialogue and atmospheric detail, the story captures the precarious balance between justice and vengeance, inviting listeners to hear the whispered hopes and looming dread of a nation on the brink.
