A space‑faring prospector finally lands back on Earth after three lonely years on Venus, expecting only the familiar faces of his old crew. Instead, the streets of Albany are swamped with strangers marked by a curious red star on their foreheads, and the once‑ubiquitous service robots have vanished, replaced by a curious new “Dream Service” at the local barbershop. The protagonist’s bewilderment turns to nervous excitement as he navigates this altered world, trying to find his old love, Gwen, while catching up with friends who have built lives in his absence.
Back in the bustling Vilt Hotel, he reunites with Tommy, Alec, and the rest of the gang, only to discover that Gwen’s welcome hug feels more obligatory than heartfelt. The strange fashions, the missing technology, and the uneasy dynamics hint at a society that has moved on without him. As he settles into his old routine, he must decide whether the past he left behind can still fit into the new rhythm of Earth.
