A freshly graduated gentleman, once cushioned by his father’s wealth and a carefree university life, is thrust into stark reality when a sudden telegram announces his father’s death and the collapse of the family’s fortunes. Suddenly penniless and with no clear path, he finds himself haunted by the expectations of “grit,” perseverance, and pluck that his social circle insists are essential for a young man to survive.
Faced with a bleak selection of options—from an uninspiring desk job to the harsh discipline of military life—he leans toward enlistment, longing for fresh air and a sense of purpose beyond the stifling city. Yet, just as he resolves to march toward the recruiting sergeant, an unexpected turn of events steers his thoughts toward a different, more adventurous pursuit that promises both danger and the chance to restore his lost standing.

A prolific storyteller with a gift for adventure, history, and the atmosphere of old Russia, he wrote dozens of books that were especially popular with young readers around the turn of the twentieth century. He also helped bring Russian literature to English-speaking audiences through some of the earliest translations of Dostoevsky.
