Description

Set in the French countryside of the late nineteenth century, the novel follows a gaunt, fervent priest whose life is ruled by an unshakable belief that every aspect of nature reflects a divine order. He spends his days wandering the fields surrounding his modest presbytery, wrestling with questions about God’s purpose while maintaining a rigid, almost hostile view of women, whom he sees as temptations and obstacles to his holy mission.

Into this austere world enters his spirited niece, a bright‑hearted young woman who delights in the simple wonders of sky, grass and insects. Her laughter, teasing kisses, and carefree curiosity clash with the priest’s stern doctrine, stirring an unexpected tenderness that both unsettles and awakens him. When whispers reach him that she may be involved with a lover, the priest is forced to confront the very convictions he has long held, setting the stage for a profound inner conflict that will shape the rest of his life.
