Description

A group of children sets off on a crisp, pre‑Christmas afternoon in 1869, boarding a bustling train at the tiny Greenbrier station. Agatha Bower, a shy thirteen‑year‑old in mourning dress, travels with three boys—Frank, his confident older brother; Herbert, the thoughtful friend; and Edward, the bright‑eyed youngster—along with the doctor's two children. Their journey, only sixty miles long, promises a homecoming to Riverton for a holiday celebration, but the children are left in charge of each other after their guardian departs hurriedly, trusting Frank to keep Agatha safe.

The narrative captures the excitement and nervous energy of a winter trek, the subtle dynamics among the youngsters, and the gentle pressure of responsibility placed on a teen who must look after his quieter companion. As the train whistles away, the children’s chatter and anticipation hint at the small adventures and heartfelt moments that await them before the Christmas festivities truly begin.
