Description

A diligent professional in London’s West End thinks a simple newspaper notice about a stray bunch of keys will be a harmless public service. Instead, the ad draws an unexpected flood of claimants, most of them curious ladies who fill his consulting room with chatter, speculation and polite persistence. The narrator watches his morning routine tumble into a comedy of manners as each hopeful applicant offers vague or wildly inaccurate descriptions, while two bemused gentlemen quickly bow out.

Just when the day threatens to become an endless parade of false claims, a middle‑aged woman arrives with a description that matches every detail of the found keys. Her confidence cuts through the confusion, and the narrator proposes a cautious verification before returning the prized bunch. The scene sets the stage for a delicate negotiation that promises both resolution and a glimpse into the quirks of Victorian society.
