A FIJIAN TRAGEDY.
The listeners are taken to the remote island of Mauritius, where the oddly‑shaped peak Pieter Both dominates the horizon. Named for a 17th‑century Dutch admiral who perished in a shipwreck, the mountain has long inspired tales of daring climbs and uncanny beauty. The narrator sets the scene with vivid description of the surrounding crater walls, sugar‑cane fields, and the lush, thorny forest that guards the trail.
At the heart of the adventure is Deebee, a stout East Indian carriole driver who has turned the mountain into his own workshop. He rigs a system of thick Manila rope, a battered horse‑pistol for shooting lines, and a makeshift cutlass to clear the path, turning a seemingly impossible ascent into a tangible challenge for the ten‑person party. As they gather on the “Shoulder” and watch the rope‑ladder stretch toward the summit, the story captures the tension, camaraderie, and raw wonder of frontier exploration.
