Description

Set against the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders, the tale follows Andrew Fairbairn, a humble ploughboy turned sailor who experiences the turbulence of war before returning to his native Kelso. There he marries the diligent Miss Henderson, whose tireless work at home—spinning wool, weaving cloth, and crafting garments—creates a warm, self‑sufficient household that nurtures a growing family.

Their eldest son, William, grows up amid the rugged landscape of Ross‑shire, where his father’s inventive farming methods turn barren ground into thriving fields. With only a knife, a gimlet and an old saw, young William fashions a tiny four‑wheel wagon to carry his infant brother, sparking a series of clever inventions that hint at his future promise. Listeners will be drawn into a vivid portrait of perseverance, ingenuity, and the everyday heroism of a 19th‑century Scottish family.
