Description

In the quiet market‑town of Coggeshall, a spirited young silk‑weaver named John Carter grows up amid the clang of looms and the narrow lanes of rural England. Though bright and popular at school, his restless nature draws him into a tight‑knit circle of “wild” friends who spend their evenings plotting daring escapades. Their latest scheme—an illicit rook‑hunting raid on the crumbling elm‑lined avenue of Holfield Grange—has all the hallmarks of a youthful rite of passage, complete with secret signals and midnight rendezvous. The adventure takes a dark turn when Carter, eager to lead, loses his grip on a towering tree and crashes forty feet to the ground, leaving him gravely injured and barely conscious.

Carter’s comrades scramble to help, crudely attempting to realign his broken limbs while he can barely form words. Their frantic, makeshift surgery gives a glimpse of both their loyalty and their lack of skill, as they haul the wounded boy on a rough hurdle back toward town. The narrative hangs on their desperate effort to bring him home, offering a vivid portrait of adolescent bravery, camaraderie, and the thin line between mischief and tragedy.
