The narrator looks back to his days as a schoolboy in early‑nineteenth‑century Peebles, a modest town where children from farms and townhouses shared the same cramped burgh school. Among them is Rob Graham, a twelve‑year‑old with a shock of red hair, a broad brow and a face that seems older than his years, dressed in hand‑me‑down corduroy and a faded Galashiels blue coat. Despite his rough attire, Rob excels at the rough‑and‑tumble games of duck and shinty, moving with a vigor that makes the better‑dressed boys look pale in comparison.
His skill is matched by a quiet generosity: he helps a struggling laundress carry her linens, offers his meagre lunch to classmates, and even joins the girls' games with a good‑natured hop on one leg. The narrator, intrigued by Rob’s mix of strength and humility, begins to offer modest lessons in arithmetic and penmanship, hoping to nurture the boy’s promise. As the school year unfolds, their tentative mentorship hints at a deeper bond that may shape both their futures.
