Description

At a time when the heat of city summers drove the well‑to‑do to pricey seaside hotels, a quieter, cheaper way to escape emerged: modest cottages set beside lakes and ponds. These squat, water‑tight cabins offered a simple refuge where families and friends could gather without the pomp of aristocratic resorts, and where the rhythm of days was set by fishing, rowing and the rustle of pine trees.

The narrator recalls a particular outing near Augusta, Maine, where a small group of respectable strangers rented one of these lakeside homes for a modest dollar a day. With a rowboat, a coffee‑pot and a few basic provisions, they spend their mornings casting lines and their evenings huddled around fire‑lit islands, sharing stories and the easy pleasure of a meal cooked over an open flame. The tale captures the gentle humor of social customs and the contentment found in unpretentious outdoor life.
