Description

In a modest Victorian household, the eldest daughter bears the title of half‑boarder, a quietly heroic figure who balances light chores with the heavier burdens of nursing an ailing mother and soothing a worried father. She tutors her younger siblings, sharing the thin slivers of knowledge she herself has managed to acquire, while also acting as playmate and nurse to the littlest children. The story paints a vivid picture of everyday resilience amid genteel yet biting penury, showing how duty and affection intertwine in the cramped rooms of a middle‑class family.

When the girl is fourteen, a sudden financial emergency drives her mother to appeal to distant relatives for assistance. The relatives, though sympathetic, refuse direct money and instead offer to take charge of the eldest child's education, hoping to secure a longer‑term solution. This well‑intentioned yet disappointing compromise forces the half‑boarder to weigh the limits of familial obligations against her own hopes for a brighter future.
