Description

A devoted husband and physician, the narrator finds himself torn between a solemn oath to aid a risky maritime venture and the loving promise he made to his wife to keep his life calm for their family. Though he doubts the wisdom of sailing again, he feels compelled by duty and love to board the ship, only to face a sudden German attack that throws the crew into chaos. In the aftermath, his desperate circumstances lead him to an unlikely shore.

He washes up on Capillaria, a fantastical land described as the “country of women,” where everyday life unfolds under a uniquely feminine order. The narrator sketches the island’s scenery with gentle humor, noting its simple topography while marveling at the customs that celebrate cooperation, modesty and communal care. His observations are filtered through an earnest admiration for his own spouse, whose virtues he holds up as a model for the society he encounters.

The novel blends lighthearted satire with a heartfelt tribute to marriage, offering listeners a reflective yet entertaining glimpse of an imagined world that questions gender roles without abandoning warmth. As the story progresses, the narrator’s gentle wit and sincere devotion invite us to consider how love and duty can shape one’s journey, even when the seas turn tumultuous.

Frigyes Karinthy

1887–1938

A sharp-witted Hungarian writer whose humor, satire, and curiosity about modern life made him one of the most beloved literary voices of early 20th-century Hungary. He is also often remembered beyond literature for the story that anticipated the idea later known as “six degrees of separation.”
